He is likely to have proposed an increase in the tariff on the sale of used electric vehicles and small petrol and diesel vehicles to 18% from the current 12%. According to sources, this hike would bring used and older small cars and electric vehicles on par with larger older vehicles.

Also, the GoM on GST Compensation is likely to get a six-month extension till June 2025, to submit its report. The cess clearing scheme will end in March 2026 and the GST Council has set up a panel of ministers, under the leadership of Union Finance Minister Pankaj Chaudhary, to decide the future course of the cess.

Another important issue under the Council’s consideration is the report of the GST Tariff Rationalization Committee, which has suggested changes in tariffs in 148 items. The GoM earlier this month decided to submit to the Council the recommendation to increase taxes on sinful goods, such as carbonated drinks, cigarettes, tobacco and related products, to 35% from the current 28%.
