In a parallel development, MDL has also started sheet metal cutting activities for the second vessel in its Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPV) project. This six-ship project, worth Rs 1,614.89 crore, began with initial sheet metal cutting on May 31, 2024.

Designed to HSC (High-Speed Craft) Class rules, these NGOPVs will be powered by twin variable-pitch propellers driven by 9,000 kW engines, enabling speeds in excess of 23 knots. The ships will also be certified double class by ABS and IRS. Their main functions include coastal and offshore patrolling, fisheries protection, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, ocean surveillance and monitoring of sea lines of communication (SLOC). They are also equipped for search and rescue missions.

Delivery of the first NGOPV is scheduled for July 2027, followed by the second in December 2027.
