Regarding the increasing number of road accidents in India, Gadkari said that India is number 1 in the world in terms of deaths due to road accidents with 1,78,000 deaths out of 5,00,000 accidents per year due to faulty roads, poor law enforcement and lack of education and awareness.
“Despite efforts made in the last 10 years we have failed to reduce road accidents in the country,” Gadkari admitted.
The minister highlighted that his ministry’s recent initiatives to correct all black spots on national highways by amending tender rules for detailed project reports (DPRs) will help reduce the number of accidents in the country.
